Healing the Heart of America Book Club: Conversations on Race

Do you wonder why this society is so polarized about racial issues and racial justice?  Would you welcome the opportunity to participate in a safe, open exploration of this sensitive topic?  If so, join us in taking a reading journey to learn about racism: its history in this country, what perpetuates it and how we might overcome the forces that divide us. Bring a curious mind and a willingness to hear different points of view.

On June 26, we will begin our discussion of Braiding Sweet Grass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teaching of Plants, by Robin Wall Kimmerer. This 2013 book by a Native American botanist explores many themes including the clash of cultures, living in the estuary between cultures and how reconciliation can help us save the planet and ourselves. Our discussion will cover the first three sections: Planting, Tending, Picking.

On July 24, we plan to complete our discussion of the rest of Braiding Sweet Grass.

Facilitator:  Linda Patterson

Healing the Heart of America: How to Have Safe and Meaningful Conversations (#82)

One of the most formidable barriers to racial understanding is the fear of exposing oneself during uncomfortable conversations. “What if I say something offensive to people of color without meaning to?” “Why do I have to keep explaining myself to White people?”

What would happen if we could find a safe place to have these conversations? What does that require? And what are the results?

Jean was part of a group at Unity of Houston engaged in Healing the Heart of America by holding Safe and Meaningful Conversations. Listen to the congregants speak about their conversations and the importance of sticking with it.  Congregants in this interview were Rev. Karen Tudor (Associate Minister, Unity of Houston), Cindy Wigglesworth, Diallo Kantambu, Alyce Coffey-Scott, Natasha Sylvester, and Jean Kantambu Latting.
