Connect Through Service

Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.

At Unity of Houston, reaching out into the community is a proactive way in which we live the principles we believe – that we all spiritually connected, one to another. In this belief, when the consciousness of one is raised that in turn raises the consciousness of us all. We connect to our Oneness by working with others to help those in need.

Unity of Houston is increasing its circle of influence by playing an even bigger role in our community!

Unity congregants have a wealth of talent, passion, and skills that can positively impact our community through outreach.  Our goal is to engage an even greater collective consciousness that can make a difference in our community. Through your participation in the survey developed by the Unity in the Community Leadership Team, programs for greater involvement in the Houston community outreach have been initiated.

The survey responses show that the greatest areas of your interests are:
1)     Child Advocacy
2)    Hunger
3)    Homelessness

The survey results show a great interest in learning more about these areas and about the participants engaging in volunteer opportunities with organizations that serve these needs in our community.  Email Rev. Mindy Lawrence Curtiss at mlawrence@unityhouston.org for more info.

UIC Lunch & Learn Speaker Series

Unity in the Community hosts a Lunch & Learn Speaker Series to bring some of the foremost thought leaders in our region to share their perspective on the issues that face the Houston area. As a group that is committed to making a difference in the lives of others in our community,  the goal of the Lunch & Learn speakers series is to educate people about the issue and the real opportunities to make a difference.  We invite selected organizations to be present to share volunteer opportunities for attendees to know when where and how they can get involved. Our primary topics for  the series are hunger, homelessness and children and youth. Speakers for 2023 included:

  • April 30: Brian Greene, President/CEO, Houston Food Bank
  • July 30: Gretchen Himsl, Chief of Staff, Children at Risk

Volunteer at Pilgrim Academy!

The 2021-2022 school year will soon begin and Unity in the Community is excited to resume its volunteer activities at Pilgrim Academy. As a Unity volunteer, you have a wonderful opportunity to tutor a student in reading, chaperone a class on a field trip, assist young children during lunch in the cafeteria, serve as history project judge, or participate at multiple fun learning activities including family night, science/math night, book fair, field day, and more. To do so, all prospective volunteers must annually register with HISD’s Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) program. Each applicant will complete a brief on-line orientation. In addition, you will need to agree to a background check for VIPS approval. That’s it! Its simple, its easy, and we promise you will have a rewarding experience as a Unity volunteer at Pilgrim Academy.

To register with VIPS, please click this link: www.houstonisd.org/VIPS. Thank you.
