May Talk Series: Four Mantras for Life

Sunday, May 26: “Don’t Be Attached to Results – The Gift of Letting Go”

Rev. Michael Gott

Nonattachment is a beautiful and difficult spiritual concept. Beautiful because when we let go of our need for things to look a certain way, it opens up endless possible paths for our good to come to us. Difficult because, well… we’re human, and we crave predictability and certainty. If we can really use this mantra, we will become highly engaged in our lives and this creates energy and intentionality; we also engage our faith, and we can trust that however things turn out, we’ll be OK. Some wise soul said, “Work as though it depends on you. Pray as though it depends on God.” Action and faith can work together only when we let go of our attachment and control.

About the May Talk Series: Four Mantras for Life

Angeles Arrien was an American anthropologist who brought the wisdom of the ancestors and indigenous peoples into everyday practices and mindsets to help modern people live with greater balance and peace in their lives. One of her teachings she called “The Four Rules for Living,” sometimes called the “Four Mantras.” She did not take credit for creating these simple phrases, only for putting them together in a way that can help us remember them easily, so that we may live more consciously and harmoniously.

  • Show up.
  • Pay attention.
  • Tell the truth.
  • Don’t be attached to results.
