July Talk Series: “Many Paths, One Door”
Unity holds a unique place in the world’s religions and traditions. We are followers of Jesus’s teachings, but we have been enriched by the teachings of all the great faiths since our very inception. We are, as writer Marcus Borg puts it, “Passionately, but not exclusively Christian.” For this series, we will explore both the commonalities and the distinctions of the world’s great faith traditions. We will seek the golden thread of truth in all as we seek to find our own unique path on the journey of our becoming.
Sunday, July 4: “What is America’s Faith Tradition?”
Dr. Jill Carroll, a beloved guest teacher and speaker at Unity as well as a renowned expert on world religions says “Nations who hold the separation of religion and state are usually antagonistic towards faith traditions. The U.S. Constitution is friendly towards religion.” America holds the separation of church and state as one of its highest ideals, while at the same time ensuring freedom of religion for all its citizens and residents. Are we living up to our ideals? Is it even possible to live together in peace with people who worship and see the world so differently? In Unity, we hold our religious diversity as a great blessing for our church, our city, our nation, and our world. Let us celebrate our freedom, as we celebrate the freedom of all to worship in the language of their own hearts.
