These speakers are some of the foremost thought leaders in our region\, sharing their perspectives on the issues that face the Houston area.  \nAt Unity of Houston\, reaching out into the community is a proactive way in which we live the principles we believe – that we are all spiritually connected\, one to another.  In this belief\, when the consciousness of one is raised that\, in turn\, raises the consciousness of us all.  We connect to our Oneness by working with others to help those in need. \nPlease join us for lunch and find out how you can help support this organization and our community outreach projects. \nSuggested lunch donation: $10 \nChildcare will be available. To ensure a spot for your child\, please complete this CHILDCARE REQUEST FORM one week in advance. \n\nAbout Dr. Theresa Tran Carapucci: \nDirector of the Houston Health Department Theresa Q. Tran Carapucci\, M.D.\, M.B.A.\, F.A.C.E.P.\, is a board-certified emergency physician and health policy leader with over 10 years of clinical experience. Dr. Tran previously served as Associate Vice President for Clinical Population Health and Advocacy at UTHealth Houston\, Assistant Dean at the UTHealth School of Public Health and Director of Strategic Initiatives for Harris Health’s award-winning Multi-Visit Patient Program. \nHer leadership has influenced state and federal legislation\, educational reform and innovative public health initiatives. She holds an M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine\, an M.B.A. from Rice University and completed her emergency medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic. Recognized as one of the “Top 25 Under 45 Influencers in Emergency Medicine” by the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association\, Dr. Tran continues to advance community health through both her professional and volunteer work.

He served as General Counsel at Sysco Corporation and later as Chief Operating Officer at Grocer’s Supply Company. \nFollowing his impactful tenure at the Houston Parks Board\, Michael took on the role of CEO at the Coalition for The Homeless\, where his strategic vision and collaboration efforts led to \nmarked improvements. These initiatives not only strengthened the organization but also contributed to more effective and sustainable solutions for addressing homelessness in Houston. \nRetiring in 2024\, Michael accepted the role of Director of Housing and Community Development Department for the City of Houston. He’s committed to ensuring affordable housing for all\, aligning with the Administration’s goal to make Houston the most affordable housing city in the nation. \nMichael has a loving wife\, Marcia Couch Nichols\, with whom he has shared over 40 years of joyous marriage\, raising four children\, and cherishing their roles as devoted grandparents to five grandchildren.

SUMMARY:World Homeless Weekend - Toiletry Drive
DESCRIPTION:As a member of the SEARCH Council of Congregations\, Unity of Houston will participate in World Homeless Weekend\, a time to raise awareness\, provide service opportunities\, pray\, or advocate for some of the most marginalized and vulnerable members of our city. We join with other congregations of all faiths in raising the consciousness in our city. \n\n\n\nPlease join SEARCH on October 9 for A Storytelling Event. The event is free\, but registration is required. Click here for more information. \n\n\n\nUnity in the Community will create and pass out cards on Sunday\, October 12\, to pray for homeless persons during the service. Mike Nichols\, Director of the Housing and Community Development Department for the City of Houston\, will give a BRIEF update on homelessness during the service. \n\n\n\nWe will also be collecting toiletries on September 28\, October 5\, and October 12 to donate to The Beacon homeless day shelter. Soap\, shampoo\, shaving cream\, disposable razors\, lotion\, toothbrushes and toothpaste are all needed. Any type and size\, from hotel complimentary sizes to gallon jugs\, all are useable and appreciated.

Here’s how to help: Visit the Sanctuary lobby on July 13\, 20\, and 27\, before or after the 11:00 a.m. service\, to donate and write a note to a student to be included with their uniform. (Uniforms will be purchased with your donation.) orDonate online – Choose “One-time” giving and select this Fund: “Unity in the Community” and the Sub Fund “Pilgrim Academy Uniforms”  \n\n\n\nVolunteer for the Back to School Fair on August 3. Sign up to volunteer here.\n\n\n\nPilgrim students and their parents will come to the Unity Campus on Saturday\, Sunday  August 3 to receive their uniforms. We will also offer other activities such as hair cuts and  face painting provided by our youth ministry. Volunteers are needed\, and we’d love to have your help!

This takes lots of hands and you can join us in this fun and rewarding volunteer activity. Please sign up and come help us serve those in need in our community.  Snacks and water provided.  You will have fun and fellowship and be blessed by your service! \nVolunteer Shift: 8:30 am – 12:00 am \nPlease plan to arrive at the shift start as we review the daily plans\, have the required safety briefing\, and assign volunteers.  Those arriving late may need to wait for an assignment or may not be needed depending on the arrival time. \nOlder children may volunteer with an adult. DESCRIPTION:Join us after the Sunday Service for lunch and an informative presentation by Houston Mayor\, John Whitmire. \nMayor Whitmire will speak on the topics of volunteerism and our Unity outreach focus areas of children\, hunger\, and homelessness. \n\nEach quarter\, Unity in the Community will host a Lunch & Learn\, featuring speakers from Houston organizations serving in our Unity of Houston areas of community Each quarter\, Unity in the Community hosts a Lunch & Learn\, featuring speakers from Houston organizations serving in our Unity of Houston areas of community outreach: child advocacy\, hunger\, and homelessness. These speakers are some of the foremost thought leaders in our region\, sharing their perspectives on the issues that face the Houston area.  \nAt Unity of Houston\, reaching out into the community is a proactive way in which we live the principles we believe – that we all spiritually connected\, one to another.  In this belief\, when the consciousness of one is raised that\, in turn\, raises the consciousness of us all.  We connect to our Oneness by working with others to help those in need. \nPlease join us for lunch and find out how you can help support this organization and our community outreach projects. \nSuggested lunch donation: $10 \nChildcare will be available.
