Join us for a lively conversation about the upcoming midterm elections, including a conversation about new rules and processes for voting, and what you can do to be more engaged. (Spanish translation will be available)

Nancy Sims: “Hottest Races and Strange Situations” andWhat you can do, including helping to “Get Out The Vote!”

Political Analyst Nancy Sims provides insights to the most competitive races in Texas, both state and local and to our current state of democracy. Conversation and questions.

Nadia Hakim:What You Need to Know: “Nuts & Bolts” for the Midterms”

The new paper ballot process, mail-in ballots, verifying your registration, and more.  Bring your questions! Nadia will bring sample ballots in English and Spanish and show us how the new voting machines work to print out your completed ballot, which is then scanned.

You will learn:

  1. What is on the ballot (including seeing a sample ballot)
  2. Finding reliable sources of information on topics you care about
  3. How to confirm your registration and find a polling location
  4. Voting rules for absentee ballots; assistance for disabled voters; and more
  5. What the in-person voting process will be like this year: ID requirements, paper ballot print/scan process, etc.
  6. What you can do to be more engaged, more involved as a citizen. Ideas for volunteering

More about Nancy Sims:

Nancy is recognized by the media for her critical insights and political analysis. She currently serves as one of the analysts for KUHF Radio (NPR Houston) and is a regular on Houston Matters. Nancy also serves as a Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Houston. She teaches Women in Politics as well as political engagement courses. Nancy earned her MLA from the University of St. Thomas and her BA in Government from Sam Houston State University. She serves on numerous non-profit boards and engages in community work throughout the Houston region.


More about Nadia Hakim

Nadia Hakim is a native Houstonian who serves her hometown as the Deputy Director of Communication and Voter Outreach at Harris County Elections. Her mighty six-person team provides Harris County Election staff, voters, and stakeholders with the information and resources they need (in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Chinese) so that they can confidently participate in democracy. She is passionate about all things voters, books, and gardening.
