“Spirit & Spunk”

Featuring Kay Kemp and Dennis Fehr

Visit the Unity of Houston Art Gallery to see the newest show, “Spirit and Spunk,” featuring artists Kay Kemp and Dennis Fehr. The gallery is located in the Welcome Center.

About Kay Kemp: (“Spirit”)

Texas artist Kay Kemp can’t remember a time when she was not making art. Kay allows the images and patterns to develop spontaneously which often results in glorious surprises and new directions as the pieces unfold. Her work is often inspired by the materials themselves which include handmade papers, vintage fabric, laces, and collectables from around the globe. She is founder of Wild Heart Art (wildheartart.com) in Houston, Texas. Kay has conducted workshops throughout the United States and special retreats in other countries. For many, Kay’s art evokes a spiritual resonance and is often accompanied by her original writing. Her work has consistently been described as inspiration and healing.

About Dennis Fehr: (“Spunk”)

“I became fascinated with drawing when, peering over the armrest of my father’s easy chair, I watched with awe as images of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck emerged from the point of his pencil. By third grade I was selling my own drawings of Mickey and Donald at school for a nickel apiece,” says Artist Dennis Fehr. Despite growing up in a culture which discouraged higher education, Dennis earned Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Education degrees. During his 25-year career as a Professor of Art Education at the University of Houston and Texas Tech University, social justice was a dominant theme in his teaching, even arranging each year for his pre-service teachers to teach art to students at the Juvenile Justice Center and to inmates at the County Jail. Dennis has published three books, taught abroad, and led an art tour through Europe. He has also consulted with other governments on their art education systems. After retiring from university teaching, Dennis focuses on making art and teaching art to students at Fusion Academy and to adults in private lessons. Fehr shares his inspiration: “Dad painted sitting on a folding chair at a card table set up in a closet. He bought his canvases at discount stores and found his frames at garage sales. My art looks nothing like his, and yet when I’m working, I feel his hand on mine.”
