A Season for Nonviolence
Gandhi & King: A Season for Nonviolence - Compassionate Activism for Global Healing
![]()
A Season for Nonviolence (SNV), which spans the period from January 29 - April 3 each year, is a national 64-day educational, media, and grassroots campaign dedicated to demonstrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform, and empower our lives and our communities. Inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this international event honors their vision for an empowered, nonviolent world. We intend to continue to expand our involvement through a series of events at Unity and within the Houston community. The major events we have planned for this year include:
- Life of Gandhi class; a 4 week class from 2-4 p.m. each Sunday in February, on the Unity campus, exploring the major events and teachings of Gandhi's life and how we can apply them to our own lives today.
- Interfaith Peace Celebration - an all-day event at the Rothko Chapel and the Univ. of St. Thomas in Houston, bringing together persons from many different spiritual backgrounds. Many different groups will offer presentations (music, sacred text readings, meditations, or other formats) around the themes of peace and nonviolence. Information booths will be staffed at the UST. Free and open to all.
64 Ways in 64 Days
If you'd like some ideas for things you can do to promote nonviolence in yourself, your family, and your community, we've prepared a list of "64 Ways in 64 Days" that you can view. The list has actually grown to 75 ways now, and we'd welcome any additional ideas that you may have as well. You can also go to the AGNT website, click on the Season for Nonviolence link, and scroll down the page to the link to another "64 Ways" list.
