Helping Students Succeed
Unity of Houston is a partner of Pilgrim Academy, an award-winning neighborhood school located just a few blocks south of Unity, serving children from grades Pre-Kindergarten to 8th Grade. Its diverse student enrollment is multicultural and comprised of over 1,100 primarily Spanish-speaking children. Through the Unity of Houston outreach organization, Unity in the Community, we are committed to helping these students succeed!
Unity of Houston partners with Pilgrim Academy in a number of ways:
- School Uniform Drive
- Back to School Fair at Unity of Houston
- Hosting Pilgrim Academy graduation at Unity of Houston
- Volunteer opportunities at Pilgrim Academy
- Teacher Appreciation Day (partnering with the Houston Food Bank to provide additional school supplies to teachers)
One of our favorite annual events is our Uniform Drive and Back to School Fair for Pilgrim Academy. Unity of Houston congregants have the opportunity to purchase school uniforms, shoes, backpacks, and other items for students at Pilgrim Academy. This project culminates in a “Back to School Fair” at Unity. During the 11:00 service at Unity on August 12, 2018, Rev. Michael Gott, Senior Minister, led the entire congregation in blessing the uniforms that had been purchased, as they were held at the front of the sanctuary. On the following Saturday, Pilgrim Academy families joined us at Unity for a fun day to pick up their uniforms and school supplies and to participate in fun activities (face painting, balloon artist, and bouncy house). Unity volunteers also provided haircuts and vision screening. Our goal is to send each Pilgrim Academy student off to school on the first day with a smile!
